Elon Musk described a plan during the weekend aimed at keeping Earth habitable for about 1 billion years, starting with a batch of satellites capable of autonomous thinking. He posted on the X platform that merely replacing fossil fuels with solar and wind energy would not be enough for humans to avoid what he called "an extremely severe extinction event" — an event that occurs roughly every 100 million years.

Solar-Powered AI Satellites with Lunar Electromagnetic Launch

His proposal is to deploy so-called "sensory satellites": powered by solar energy and controlled by AI, positioned in a fixed location between Earth and the Sun once launched into space. Unlike traditional rockets, Musk envisions using a giant electromagnetic launcher on the Moon's surface to send them into space — the Moon has much lower gravity and no atmosphere, making it far easier and cheaper to launch cargo from the Moon than from Earth, thus reducing the cost of raw materials going into space.

The AI onboard the satellites will operate autonomously, making small adjustments to their orbit and position without waiting for human instructions. To illustrate the urgency, Musk shared an estimate generated by Grok: under a high sea level rise scenario, about 5% of Florida's land (around 1.68 million acres) may face frequent flooding by 2070, giving humans approximately 50 years to take action.

This is not his first such idea. In November last year, he had already considered a constellation of solar-powered AI satellites, which would regulate the amount of sunlight reaching Earth with extreme precision to control the planet's temperature; this risk narrative is also connected to SpaceX's grand vision — its compensation plans are explicitly tied to establishing a self-sustaining Martian colony, which Musk has described as a "insurance policy" against such extinction events. He also said humans might set foot on Mars within the next 5 to 7 years.
