Global music industry giants Sony and Warner have recently filed a major lawsuit against the AI unicorn Anthropic, accusing it of one of the largest and most severe copyright infringement incidents in the history of technological development. The core of this lawsuit directly targets Anthropic's unauthorized use of tens of thousands of copyrighted music works for model training during the development and operation of the Claude series AI models.
According to detailed disclosures in the complaint, Anthropic, along with its founder Dario Amodei and Benjamin Mann, is accused of using extremely aggressive and non-compliant methods to obtain training data. The lawsuit states that Mann downloaded more than 5 million pirated books via BitTorrent, while other employees of Anthropic also downloaded over 2 million pirated e-books from platforms such as Pirate Library Mirror. Moreover, to collect lyric data, the team bypassed platforms that had obtained legal authorization from record companies (such as MusixMatch and LyricFind) and instead used illegal scraping methods to obtain copyrighted content.
In response to these serious allegations of infringement, the plaintiff record companies have made strict legal demands. They are requesting the court to impose a maximum penalty of $150,000 per infringing work; additionally, they are seeking an extra maximum penalty of $25,000 for each instance where copyright information was maliciously removed. Legal experts analyze that given the enormous number of infringing works, if the court ultimately rules in favor of the plaintiffs and applies the highest penalty standards, the total compensation amount that Anthropic may face could surge into the billions of dollars.
This lawsuit has once again brought the long-standing copyright disputes in the entire artificial intelligence industry to the forefront. As major content copyright holders begin to take strong legal measures to protect their rights, how AI companies ensure the legality and compliance of their training data has become a key compliance threshold determining their commercial fate.
